8 Before the dipping of the needle be decided, the friction rollers must
9 be properly put in motion,600 to be sure of the direction of the
10 magnetic line on both surfaces of the needle (again) |

13 needle was first made for the Royal observatory at Richmond. I

Anmerkungen

826 Durch die Lagerung der Zapfen der Inklinationsnadel auf Friktions­rollen, vgl. VNat 3, 592 (Anm. 323), wird der Reibungswiderstand, der die Beweglichkeit der Nadel begrenzt, verringert. L. hatte diese Lagerung im Observatorium von Kew (Richmond) kennengelernt und Brander für den Bau von Inklinationsnadeln empfohlen (vgl. Bw 1, Nr. 266 [S. 483 f.]). Allerdings hielt L. den Durchmesser der Reibungsrollen des Inklinatoriums von Kew für zu gering. Für das ihm von Drechsler gebaute Instrument, mit dem L. nach Erhalt im Juli 1778 nicht völlig zufrieden war, hätte L. Rollen gewünscht, deren Durchmesser (Bw 1, Nr. 496) „4mal so groß seyn“ sollten, nach dem Vorbild des bei Mulgrave (Voyage 1774, 113 f.) beschrie­benen, von Nairne für das „Board of Longitude“ gebauten Instruments. Nairne hatte das Instrument nach den Angaben von Michell (Experiments 1772; vgl. Bw 5.2, 534 [Abb. 32]) angefertigt.
